today

I ran errands today, and i stopped by a small thrift store and bought pearl jam's "10" on cassette tape and "the freshman" with matthew broderick. i came home, ate a sandwich and put in the vhs. at some point in the movie, while still good, i picked up my computer and double dutied it.

i came about some great new and old music. i miss those days of discovering. it felt new today. everything. enough of that sappy shit.

expect some cool new explorations.

i leave you with this.

"Paki Not Indie" - Sunny Ali & The Kid

A couple of months ago I heard of a band from Philly called, Sunny Ali & the Kid. I was intrigued because it features, Hassan Ali, guitarist and fallen member of of the all Pakistani brother band, PO PO.

After a conversation with Yvynyl, I was informed that Ali wanted to ditch playing punk and concentrate on making country music. I'm sorry Ali, but at this point I'm not sure you can't stay away from your punk roots, but this isn't a bad thing. On Try Harder, the bands first release, SAK do have hints of country two-steppin in tracks like "Cand Stand You" and title track, "Try Harder." The band also have two acoustic heart hitters that really make me worried for the mental health of Hassan. My favorite track on the EP is the humorously titled, "You Know What Jawad," a goth-country jem both scary and catchy.

Check out their bandcamp site and download this EP for free before they take that feature away. Also with tee's, like the one below, how can I not love this band ::

what am i trying this week

ALEX BLEEKER AND THE FREAKS // COASTING :: MONSTER ISLAND : FRIDAY JULY 2

went to check out monster island basement the other night. pretty cool venue, if i say so myself. decent size stage in the corner, ample amount of room, but not to big. if the show is soldout its gonna get hot, but it there are only like 20/30 people its still a good night. went out to go see the BEETS, but they played last, hadnt showed up after coasting and i got tired (damn you work industry). i did however get to check out DEAD GAZE, ALEX BLEEKER AND THE FREAKS, and COASTING.

didn't get a pic of DEAD GAZE, but i did walk away with some gnarly sluggy beachy stoned riffs stuck in my head. somewhere between wavves and high on fire, dead gaze is a two piece who play some loud rawk. they got a tape out on Mirror Universe Tapes. and this show was for group tightner, so maybe they got something in the mix for a GT release.

ALEX BLEEKER AND THE FREAKS were up next. with help from buddy and pals big troubles and some real estate homies he got his game on to jam for many friends and fans. alex is a funny looking dude and if you saw him on the streets one could say he would be into the dead or didn't know anything about music and was like a brown version of the dude from king of queens. lucky for us he plays some pretty laid back tunes reminiscent of neil young and silver jews. also have you heard this dudes version of mountain man's "animal tracks", cuz it rules.

up next was COASTING. i was lucky enough to grab their last copy of the cassette ep they released on Sixteen Tambourines. its a nice 4 song ep that was totally worth the hanging by the merch booth waiting as the ladies got done hitting on some boys. they came over cuz they saw my good looks and me holding some dough, thats the way to attract the opposite sex boys! anyways there set was great and they rocked it. monster island was perfecto for them, loud, close knit fans, beer and being high.

I WANT TO BE CAUGHT IN DUNES

so there is this band from LA (who would have figured) that has been making my ears swell with smiles. they are called DUNES. there are three people in the band, many with familiar faces to the underground community. KATE HALL, ex drummer of Mika Miko, STEPHANIE CHAN, of The Carrots and Finally Punk (my favorite band of all time), and MARK (something, he's the only one in the band that i don't know about).

they have been getting much respect from the LA scene, playing with many of LA's hit makers, Best Coast, Abe Vigoda, The Soft Pack. They are about to head out on tour in the fall, nowhere near NYC, but still they are going out and are probably going to change someone's life. i wish i was 18 again.

enjoy there tunes, and here's a video of them playing "Balance" at the smell ::

GONE FOR A MONTH :: APOLOGIES

So i moved from Lubbock, TX to Brooklyn, NY. It's taken me a good month a half to get adjusted to life up here. Sorta got a job, sort don't, but I'm getting by.

THINGS THAT HAPPENED SINCE I STOPPED UPDATING ::

- Ariel Pink finally dropped his record, getting mad reviews.

- Explode Into Color and Tempo No Tempo both played their last shows this month, bummersville.

- M.I.A. got thrashed in the NYT, and she got pissed and twited the journalist Phone #.

- Wavves is realeasing a single on Mountain Dew label, weird.

- THE COATHANGERS got remixed by Dan deacon, and its fuckin the jam!

- My homies the Diamond Center did a daytrotter sesion, be on the look out for that in the future!

- Panda Bear played Primavera, mixed reviews, genius or genius on the brink of WTF-dom.

- Best Coast does Primavera, covers supposed bf Wavves.

- Dennis "PBR" Hopper dies, that sucked.

- BP are still dicks.

INTO THE WOODS WITH E.I.C.

I like the internet. And i like music. And i like finding other people on the internet that like music just as much as i do. Bread N Butter is one of those peeps. With pretty consistent post from everything from Twin Sister video's to how Phoenix (who i am not a fan of) will be doing the soundtrack to a new Sophia Coppola (who i do like) movie.

Yesterday they put up a 17 minute video of Explode Into Color hanging and playing tunes for their friends in a cabin in nowhere Oregon. i saw EIC at SXSW this year and they were amazing. Not really consistent with what I normally listen to, meaning that they do their shit good. the cinematography goes pretty darn well with the music, really showcasing how one's nature can affect your outputs in the arts.

Hide That Shit,PO PO, Are Here

I've seen PO PO perform twice, and both times the shows blew my mind. The first in a completely empty bodega, where they had to go after MONOTONIX, and even then I was assaulted with some pretty rough acid punk to my face. The second time was at LA's the Smell, where while the energy was still there, the approach seemed to come from more of an experimental side.

PO PO started out as a trio of, American born, brothers of Pakistani decent, from Philly. About a year ago two of the brothers left to relocate to LA where they have been playing pretty steadily; this past weekend saw them co-headline a Vice Magazine's after-coahella party. (PS the other brother is still jamming in another equally as cool band, Sunny Ali and the Kid). The brother are on Mad Decent (Diplo's label) and are currently the only rock band on the roster. And while it might seem odd to some, it seems to work in the way that Need New Body can be a banjo playing-pot smokin-Sun Ra lovin-rock band and still mess with hip hop licks and experimental techno synth grunge. The band has been working with a new drummer (Jacob of Bark Bark Bark and Signals fame) and like previously mentioned, the songs still have that raw power energy, but i get the feeling the group seems to really want to go the direction of a twist within DNA, The Mummies, and Thee Oh Sees. And again, it work's.

Here is a link, from sometime ago, to download "Knife is Yung", a newer track recorded for the yet untitled and dateless new PO PO LP. But you ain't just getting that old shit, no no..here is a video for a newly released single titled "Final Fight."

[[ViDEO]] SIGNALS :: WHAT DREAMS

Now that I no longer have to deal with taking care a of house (the perks of being homeless) and that I can can stay in one city for longer than 12 hours, I am back to my regular duties of surfing the internet for nonsensical things. Which at times also allows me to stumble across some pretty amazing tidbits/news info on different bands/artist/designers what have you.

Today i have a video from LA's SIGNALS. The song is titled WHAT DREAMS, and you can wait a bit for the full lenght to come out. Or you can try to snag a 7" (which i was able too, and is totally worth it) from Moshi Moshi Records.

If one would like to know what some southern California punks would do if they got a hold of some pretty ridiculous computer synth programs then look no further than this jam!

Kewl

They don't make em like they used too. This post has nothing to do with Sir Paul nor the Beatles, but that moment captured by film is just kewl.

Speaking of kewl, I've been digging on Austin's Harlem pretty hard lately. And their new album, Hippies, is pretty rad as well. It is not slated to be released until April 6, on Matador Records, but like most things lately the internet already owne's a copy of it, and he is happy to share it. But don't worry Matador and Harlem, I'm sure when it gets released I will purchase the LP, it's that solid!

Check out opening track, and personal favorite, "Someday Soon."

FUCK COLLEGE

A couple of months ago I saw some Cold Cave video on the wish-washy Pitchfork TV Tunnlevision show. (click here to read Part Time Music's extensive Pitchfork ratings research). I was intrigued, but not till about a week ago did I give some time to their releases "Cremations" and "Love Comes Close."

Shits been hitting pretty hard in my ears. And then three days ago I find out via a retweet from Best Coast that former co-lead singer of the fantastic band Mika Miko, Jennifer Clavin, has quit college and join Cold Cave. I haven't heard any official word from anybody, but that's pretty rad news. Click here to read the tweet.

Say it with me, PAR--TY

While it's still miserable and cold outside, I still can't help but feed my knack for surf music. It's sunny/breezy/gritty guitars and laid back drums just plain give me good vibes. In good surf rock [my opinion] I want to hear something that I can both chill back on or put on to get things rolling. LA's The Allah La's fulfill both of these requirements.

I have yet to hear of any releases from the quartet, nor was able to download anything, so your gonna have to settle on good ole' myspace. If I would have posted this a couple of weeks ago you could have been able to hear 4 wave-blissed tunes, but now you are gonna have to settle for 2. Listen to the shake-rific track "Catamaran" [the chill track] and the party rolling "Long Journey."

And if and when they do release something, I hope they use this piece of art I found on their space. ITS AWESOME!

Child Warriors

Do you miss CocoRosie? I do. I mean I miss the early days of CocoRosie, the lo-fi animal sound casio keyboards, the childlike keyboard playing, all mixed with odd vocals, which to me, just sounded incredibly pleasant and sweet.

The nice thing about the internet is that there's a playground of other children, all with just as much freak in them as the next. Not all of them are gonna be winners, but every now and then you stumble across a band that has that innocence and outsider authenticity that will have an affect on your bones. I felt that way when I came across Albuquerque, New Mexico's Pantaloof.

While I could go into some detail as to how much I really appreciate the child like euphoria I get when I hear a Pantaloof track, I like the way they describe their inspirations for their musical outputs ::

"pyramids, kissing, the sound of children laughing, ragers, knitting, partaking in the worshipping of magical herbs, cats purring, rap sessions, song circle, liberation."

Post-Apocalyptic

What were you doing when you first heard about Y2K? I remember my mom going crazy, looking through our cupboards making sure we had enough canned food. Now all we have to look forward to is either the Mayan prophecy to come true or the New world Order takes charge. Either way we seemed fucked.

The Jesus and Mary Chain seem to have this affect on my brainwaves to venture into the post-apocalyptic world. This latest listen to Psychocandy was particularly impacting on my skull muscle. And with that I found myself video surfing J&MC jams. Which eventually lead me to this particular video, which contained this particular William Reid quote, which had me thinking about the post-apocalyptic in a much more optimistic light: "We may have been in the gutter, but we were looking up at the stars..."

Frau-TASTIC

I am a huge fan of the Raincoats, d.i.y. ethos, and three girl vocal harmonies. So it's no surprise I have been digging Grass Widow, Brilliant Colors, and the Dum Dum Girls. But what about those cheeky British, what do they have to offer to the table? Well, there's WETDOG. A trio from UK storming the charts with their brand of all girl post-(finally) punk.

They just released there 2nd record on Captured Tracks, Frauhaus!, and are already prepping for SXSW, some dates with the Vivian Girls in March and an east coast tour with label mates Blank Dog (who also is the owner of Captured Tracks).

I've heard a couple of tracks from Frauhaus, and they are pretty rad. Think a more controlled Finally Punk, mixed with some love from C86 mixes, the style of 2012 Bushwick, and a dash of Bikini Kill.

WETDOG :: Lower Leg

WETDOG :: Snapper

"...Eclipse, My Hips..."

It's not a secret anymore, Mountain Man is amazing. I've been seeing there name being dropped like butter on a pan by everyone from Gorilla vs. Bear, to Chocolate Bobka, to Part Time Music. And unlike the buzz that feeds around so many cute one hit indie wonders, Mountain Man, although still an infant in rock years [one year this April], have a bright and poetic future still ahead of them.

I've heard a couple of tracks by them, but it was not until I heard their contribution to Underwater Peoples Winter Review Compilation that had me weak to the knees. It's sparce guitar notes and those heavy vocals, uh, I can't even imagine how this song would sound live? I think I would weep. Luring you in like love in the spring and quickly letting you go in the dead of winter, "Dog Song", is a short, but beautifully narrated tale of time being pleasantly spent with the one. It's one of those songs you lay in your bed listening to, while you stare out your windows at trees.

Please treat your self to this jem of a song.
